Gmail crashing
MUMBAI: Google
Mail, popularly known as Gmail, was attacked on Tuesday. The oldest trick of the day was used to hack into one of the widely-used email service providers, when thousands of machines controlled by a group of people may have been directed to access Gmail simultaneously, resulting in a crash of Gmail’s servers.
Gmail went down at 2 pm IST, causing inconvenience to as many as 110 million users worldwide. Through the afternoon, Gmail continued its fight sputtering to life for some time, only to die again. The email service provider, however, was able to rectify the problem late in the evening.
“This may have been due to an attack led by thousands of PCs controlled by a few people who may have directed them to crash the email service’s servers or Google might have been alerted of such an attack. This does not put the data to risk, but availability of the data is definitely a problem,” KPMG executive director Akhilesh Tuteja told ET. “This means Google now needs to differentiate between machines and human beings,” he said.
